Get bready to make the perfect round of toast

  1. what's your weapon of choice?. my personal favourite is Hovis seed sensations. you may prefer farmhouse, sourdoguh, wholemeal (anything but the best of both worlds nonsense).
  2. choose your toppings wisely. the toppings and the order matter. for example, my go to is Lurpak on one slice, and Lurpak & marmite on the other. sometimes, if I'm feeling fancy, Lurpark & marmite and Lurpak & jam (not together, on separate slices - I'm not an animal). for the purpose of these instructions, we'll be using the Lurpak & marmite combo
  3. pop your toast in the toaster. now, this part is tricky to advise on because different toasters = different settings. mine is always set to a 3. if you're just doing a 1 slicer, be sure to turn the heat down because your toast will burn
  4. while your toast is cooking, prepare your plate. warm a plate under the hot tap for a couple of seconds to take the chill out of it. a very simple formula here: hot bread + cold plate = soggy toast = sad Maisie
  5. your toast has popped - yay! don't panic, but you have very limited time to get the butter spreaded before the toast goes cold. luckily, your warm plate will help you out here
  6. leave one slice in the toaster and handle one thing at a time - let's not bite off more than we can chew. spread the butter on the first slice evenly but generously. spread until it's completely dissolved. the motion here is key - you want to apply some pressure as to squish certain parts of the bread down. this is CRUCIAL for the marmite application
  7. after the first slice has been sufficiently buttered, grab your second slice out the toaster and plonk on top of the first slice. repeat motion above. don't worry if the butter doesn't completely dissolve - once you switch the slices round, the heat from the other slice will melt it
  8. return to the first slice. this is going to be your toast with the topping (e.g., Lurpak & marmite, butter & marmalade, butter & jam) whatever you fancy
